Spanish olive oil exports almost double the domestic market this season

During the current olive growing season (October 2024 - May 2025), the olive oil sector in Spain has reached historic figures in foreign trade. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, exports have already exceeded 627 800 tonnes, representing a 28 % increase compared to the same period last year.
This exported volume is almost double the national consumption, which has also grown to over 373,000 tonnes. December was the most important domestic month, with a demand of 55,000 tonnes.
As for the destination of exports:
- More than 224 000 tonnes have been shipped to countries outside the European Union.
- Italy, as the main European buyer, received 175,300 tonnes.
- Other international markets absorbed a further 137 400 tonnes.
Moreover, the rate of exports has been very constant, with a monthly average of over 80 000 tonnes in the first five months of the year, with a peak of 91 000 tonnes in May.
On the other hand, oil stocks in April stood at 762 800 tonnes, 23% above the average for the last four marketing years. Of this, 74% is stored in oil mills, which reinforces the role of production centres as the sector's logistical base.
